Welcome from EVS School Counselors!
 

        We are very excited to announce that our very own Ms. Shala Darwin, M.Ed is the recipient of the PWRCA School Counselor of the Year award. Congratulations!

The school's counseling program at Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary School is designed to promote academic/educational development, personal/social development and career awareness.  As an integral part of the school program, elementary counseling builds a foundation for learning based on
  • Positive attitudes towards school and learning
  • Personal responsibility
  • Respect for self and others, and
  • Knowledge and skills for academic growth and development.
School Counseling Program Mission Statement
The mission of the Elizabeth Vaughan Elementary school counseling program aligns with the school mission and vision: to support excellence for all, whatever it takes. The Counselors at EVS provide a comprehensive program that promotes creating a college bound culture and contributes to students’ academic, personal, social, and career development. The comprehensive program will empower students to excel and foster excellence for all.

Please contact your school counselor if you have any concerns about your child regarding:
  
 *Family changes (Moving, illness, death, divorce or separation)
       *Sudden changes in classroom performance
       *Sudden changes in behavior at school or home
        *Peer relationships
        *Self concept
Provides information and/or referrals for community resources to families
Self-referral forms are available for students outside the counselors office as well as bully report forms. All forms are available in each classroom.

Program Announcements
Essay Writing for Specialty Program Applications
All Specialty Program applications are due no later than Feb. 14th. Essay writing will begin the week of Jan. 24th. Due to the inclement weather, students who have not had the opportunity to complete their essay will complete upon the return to school. If you have any further concerns or questions you can contact the school counselor, Ms. Darwin at darwinss@pwcs.edu.
Saturday and Summer Enrichment Program at University of Virginia
The Summer Enrichment Program is for rising 5th through 11th grade students. This summer residential programs' mission is to engage gifted and/ or high ability students in high quality learning experiences designed to cultivate interest and potential in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. The application will be online December 15, 2010 with a deadline of February 15, 2011. Candidates must submit responses to two writing prompts and request a recommendation from one teacher. Specialty Program Applications & Essay Writing
All Specialty program applications are due February 14th. This is a good time for your child to begin to practice writing the essay to prepare. Essay writing will take place on January 24th at Vaughan Elementary during the school day. Reminders and more information regarding the specialty program application process will be going home this week. If you have any questions and or concerns regarding the application process, please contact Ms. Darwin, Professional School Counselor.

Office of Special Education, Parent Resource Center
Monday Night Parent/Staff Meet and Greet session

The Office of Special Education Parent Resource Center will host a meet and greet for parents of students who attend the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disabilities programs. Parents will have the opportunity to meet the supervisor and administrative coordinators who will answer general questions regarding programs for students with ASD and intellectual disabilities. General questions about the disabilities may also be discussed. Parents are welcome to attend any or all sessions listed below.

Parent Workshop with "The College Place"
Elizabeth Vaughan ES and Woodbridge MS willl be collaborating to conduct a parent workshop with "The College Place". This parent workshop will take place Monday, October 25th at Woodbridge MS. This workshop will begin at 7:00 p.m. Please come out to support our vision to plant the seed to succeed and our students' goal to go to College.

  • Preparing students for college
  • Academic expectations
  • Creating a culture of learning at home
  • Financial options and resources for college
The Young Ladies of Distinction Induction Ceremony
The Young Ladies of Distinction for the 2010-2011 school year, will be inducted into the program on Thursday, October 28th. The Induction Ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m.
